I'm sick again! This has not been a good year for me for colds. I have had this one now for going on 7+ days. The last time I ran was last Thursday (not yesterday, the one before that). It has consisted of very swollen tonsils, body aches, headache and significant fatigue. So, that mixed with the fact that I have been very busy and stressed at work this week, I decided I needed some time off from running or I would only get worse not better. So, I missed last weekend's 11 miler and have not run this week. I am not starting to feel a little better throat wise but have zero energy still. I'm wondering, 1. should I run the 9 miles tomorrow (it's driving me crazy not running!!!) and 2. Will I be prepared for the 21 miler since I missed last week's running. This marathon means a lot to me but i don't want to push too hard at this point and get more sick and miss the 21 miler because I know that's critical, but I also don't want to be unprepared for that benchmark. Ideas?!?!?

From reading your blogs throughout the season, you seem to be pretty fit. when I had the flu earlier in the seaon I tried to start back at running too soon and got even sicker because of it, and had to take even more time off. My suggestion would be to relax a few more days and possibly do some walking since the weather is due to be real warm this weekend.

Marion,
I agree with the above poster. You have been very active in the training season, and I doubt very seriously that you are going to lose enough fitness to put you out of the running for the marathon. Pun intended! smile.gif

"... i don't want to push too hard at this point and get more sick..."

Take the extra time you need, to get better. This will no doubt make you very hungry to run by the time the 21 miler comes around, and at that point you'll have a clearer sense of your ability to accomplish it.

My two cents,
Doug

Marion,
think of it as a 2 week taper to the 21 miler! You're not going to lose all your fitness in two weeks, and you will prolong your illness if you jump back before your body is fully rested. If this weekend was the 21 miler, that would be tougher, so I'm glad you got sick during the shorter mileage weeks (if you had to get sick that is). Do you keep track of your lowest resting heart rate in the mornings? If you know what it was consistently when you were well, you could compare it to what it is now- if still significantly elevated, you would have a pretty clear indicator that your body isn't healed and ready to go again yet.

Get well soon! smile.gif
