Full Version: Knee pain- unsure of how to proceed

After reading all of the various postings about knee pain, I am still unsure on how to proceed with my own knee pain problems. Here's what I have been experiencing (seems different from other postings):
-never experienced knee pain before
-had pain in both knees following first few runs with Portland fit, now am only experiencing pain in my left knee
-pain is mostly on top of knee cap, feels tight and dull mostly (does not stop me from running)
-I was only experiencing this pain during a run, and then only periodically (pain was worse directly after some runs)
-now have been feeling some pain off and on while at rest (but only after prolonged sitting)
-the pain is intermitant during the runs (sometimes at the begining sometimes towards the end)

I have been told that I have pronate inward fairly dramatically and have 'special shoes' for this, but have heard that insoles may help my knees.

Any advice? I took about a week and a half off from running and its still an issue. I want to keep running but don't want to case long term damage.

Thanks!
Dr. Jake
Erin,
What is your height, weight, and age? If you have pain above the knee cap, you should focus stretch your quad muscles (front of thigh). I would also imagine that your squat mechanics are off causing you to recruit your quad muscles during the runs. Stop by the tent and have a doc look at your squat form and see if we can help.
Cheers,
Dr. Jake
