I’ve been out with a stress fracture since the 30K. I ran in the Cascade Lakes relay the weekend before and I guess I was still too tired to do that many miles the next week.

I think my foot is healed and I’ve run a little on it but I’m not sure how many miles to do between now and the marathon. I’m worried about re-injuring myself if I do the 21 miler but I’m equally worried about not pushing myself and not being as ready as I could otherwise be.

Can anyone help me with a schedule for the next five weeks?

I could give you a couple of different answers but more importantly what does your Dr. say about doing a 21 miler in September and then an October marathon. There is a difference about being released to start running and being released to do these two long events within a few weeks of each other.

If your Dr. did approve of this level of running this close to recovery from your stress fracture; I personally would do try the 21 miler, but very easy. The miles are more important than the pace. I have ran a marathon without doing at least one run over 18 miles, due to injury, and it was hard and painful. I think it also could make a difference if your body has experienced doing a marathon before and how did your body handle it.

Really good advice from AC Scott. Take a stress fracture seriously.
