So, I was an idiot and did not sign up in time for the Portland Marathon - instead I am doing the Bellingham Marathon on September 26th. I was wondering what suggestions were for walking the 21 miles? Should I do it a week earlier than scheduled or walk it with the group and then taper the last two weeks? I feel fine after the 30 km this past weekend ... Any suggestions would be most welcomed - this is my first marathon. Will

I'm doing the other Portland* Marathon on 10/3 and plan to do my 21 miles a week before the scheduled benchmark and taper from there.
Good luck in Bellingham.

Rose, where are your rest days ohmy.gif ?

Note: this is not a recommended practice for all (Rose...you're truly a Maniac smile.gif). Good Luck and be safe!

My question is similar. I can't make the marathon because I'll be in Phoenix as a maid of honor. My running buddy and I discussed maybe adding mileage to our 21 miler so I can 'do' a marathon with bathroom stops and a few water stations. I don't want to travel anywhere for money reasons and I've heard Seattle is a brutal first marathon.

I've got no injuries and I've made every run and benchmark this season. Will I hurt myself by adding another 5.2 miles to our 21 benchmark and then being done for the season?

Just thinking out loud...

We're Crazy People. Don't try this at home boys and girls.

Okay. right now, I do about a mile and a half every day and Pfit distance most weekends. I take a day off about every 10 days or so. Everything I do is fairly easy, because I'm old and slow and mostly walk.

I would not do this combo in the opposite order. Timing is more of an issue for Maine, but I know that someone will be at the finish line at our Portland until the last person comes in. I've done enough of these now to have a pretty good idea of what I can do, and I'm not worried about it. I did decide that doing the marathon in New Hampshire the day before Maine probably wasn't a good idea.

For that week, I'm running on Sunday, flying home on Monday, doing short easy mileage the rest of the week and running again on Sunday. Then I'll take some time off. Probably.
