Full Version: Idle with knee problem

I've been on the bench since the Monday after the 15.5 mile run. I had a great 15.5 but pushed myself. Then on Monday I did 4 miles, I thought my right knee was just tight, so ran on it thinking it would loosen up. That was a big mistake. The next day (last Tuesday), I could barely walk up and down steps without limping. A week later I'm still nursing this thing.

The problem is focused on the lower outside part of my right knee. If I press on the bone that juts out there, it feels bruised, but only in a small spot about the size of a dime. I feel it when I rest my weight on my right leg and bend my knee, or when I apply lifting force with my right leg. I've been stretching, resting, drinking water, and not running. I can walk fine and do household tasks without any problem, but I know it is there. I feel like I should have recovered after taking a week off.

Help!

Oregon Hops,
Sorry to hear about your issues. Without checking it out with my own eyes, it sounds like classical Iliotibial Band Syndrome (IT Band). Questions for you; do you wear orthotics? Do you have a known leg length inequality? Have your knees, hips, or ankles had any previous surgeries?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Dr. Greg

orthotics - no
leg length - negative (but never been checked)
surgeries - no

From the info you supplied, I'd say you have IT Band Syndrome. Not always, but typically, there is either a functional and/or anatomical leg length inequality associated with it, as well as ipsilateral gluteus medius weakness. Post half marathon to around the 17 miler is the time period most IT Band Syndromes manifest...the signs have been there, but only now have symptoms become clinical.
What to do? Obsess on stretching the glutes and hip flexors (meaning as close to hourly as possible), ice the painful area, modify activity....if it hurts, you shouldn’t do it…..often the elliptical can help get your miles in without exacerbating knee symptoms. Time, stretching, strengthening, and behavior modification are the key components.

Your PT or Chiro can help the process by using passive modalities such as ultrasound, estim, guasha, massage, Kinesio Taping, and adjusting.

People often ask about Ibuprofen and other NSAIDS and I tell them they are for discomfort only. Over the counter dosages do not have anti-inflammatory effects. Its best to save your stomach from bleeding and not take anything…unless you feel you would benefit from it.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks, it is starting to feel much better. I'm going to rest for at least another day or two.

What are some good stretches for glutes and hip flexors?

I'm guessing I should also avoid the long runs until I'm back to full strength?
Dr.Greg
These stretches are great. Check out the calfs and hamstrings too!
