Full Version: Can I run a half-marathon on Sept. 5?

Hi coaches!

Well, I've decided not to run Helvetia, thanks to an ankle sprain and advice from Dr. Greg. I'd really like to do another half this summer, just to have the experience, but my ultimate goal is the Portland Marathon.

Based on our schedule, do you think it would be ok to run the Eugene Women's Half Marathon on September 5th? I see that our schedule (red) has us running 9 miles that weekend in preparation for the 21-miler the following weekend. I would shoot for an earlier half, but I don't want to mess with my ankle recovery.

Please let me know what you think. I'd be running it slowly, not racing it (although I imagine adrenaline will make me a bit faster than my standard 12-minute pace). Of course, I don't want to mess up my training, so if you think there wouldn't be enough recovery time before the 21-miler, I'll bag it.

Thanks for your advice!

Hi Caitlin,

I'm also not running Helvetia this weekend due to a hip injury. I know you said you'd rather not do a half earlier but maybe you could consider the Lacamas Lake Half Marathon on July 25th in Camas, WA. I'm shooting for that one so I get that half marathon experience and a guage for where I'm at for the marathon. I don't know how long your recovery time is though. The weekend of the 25th we're scheduled to run 13 miles with Portland Fit, too, so it works out perfectly.

Cool, thanks for the tip! I will definitely consider that if it looks like my recovery is going well. I'm hoping I'd be ready by then. Thanks again!
