Full Version: IT Band?

I'm new to running and am having a dull pain on the outside of my knee. It didn't hurt during last Saturday's 9 mile run, but definitely slowed me down this morning. Everything I've been reading makes it sound like it could be my IT band. I've been icing, stretching, using a roller massager, and popped a couple Aleve (same routine I've been doing for shin pain). I do leg exercises (lunges, one-legged squats on a bosu ball, ect.) three times per week. Anything else I should be doing? Being a newbie, I'm afraid to back off my runs.

Hi Matt,
Sorry to hear about your aches and pains. The knee pain, with history of shin pain, makes me question the stability of the ankle/foot and hip. Anatomical leg length inequalities often are a contributing factor to this. Do you have a Chiropractor or PT you go to and trust? Sounds like some potential biomechanical issues should be looked at.
In the meantime, continuing to run with discomfort is not wise. Use alternative cardiovascular training methods like the stationary bike or Elliptical Trainer until a root cause is found. Stop by the tents on Saturday and let someone take a look at you.

You should not have to use any NSAIDS during, before, or after your runs. That's like covering up the "check engine light" to your car. Get to the shop, get the diagnosis, and fix the problem.

Stop by the table on Saturday.

Thanks, Dr. Greg. I saw my doctor and a PT for another knee issue (Runner's Knee) on my other knee, and for my shins. The Runner's Knee cleared up and the shins are getting better. The PT has me do a lot of foot, lower leg, and quad exercises and stretches. I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but will do alternative cardio and will check in with you at the tents the following weekend.
