Full Version: Running with a cold

Late last week, I got a a regular cold with the regular symptoms - sore throat, congestion, and a bit of a cough. And although I was feeling just a little under the weather, I really wanted to run the benchmark 25K on Saturday. I was very well hydrated and even had to use the restrooms twice during the run. I didn't look at the color of the urine.

Well . . . the run was very, very hard. I felt sluggish from almost the beginning. By mile ten, just about everything hurt - legs, hips, upper and lower back, you name it. And during the last mile was shuffling more than running. By the time I reached the parking lot, most of the runners had already gone home. I remember feeling a lot lot better during the Helvatia Half marathon.

My question is this: Can running with a mild cold really cause a person to be that run down? Could my fatigue have been a combination of the cold and the heat that day? I also have a tendency to run a bit on my toes, which I'm working on. But, this bad form can slow me down a bit.

I would love to hear your opinions.

Thank you.

When you run...you use energy stores. When you are sick, your body uses energy stores to mount an immune response against whatever is floating your body. When it is hot outside, your body uses enery stores to manage your internal temperature. Sickness + Running + Heat = tons of energy being used in many different body systems = bad day for running. So yes, being sick could be a contributor to you having a bad run.
