Hi Katie
Plantar fasciitis is actually now considered plantar fasciosis. The terminology has changed because the condition is considered chronic, not acute…..meaning it has been around for a while and has recently chose to rear it’s ugly head. Essentially the origin of the plantar fascia has been over worked and inflamed for so long, the tissue has begun to die. Support of the foot (walking boot or brace with crutches, and wearing a night splint) and rest are what remedy this condition. It can take up to 6 months for the condition to subside.
Lots of hip, leg, and foot stretching are recommended. Cycling and/or swimming are great alternatives for running during the healing process.
If she truly has Plantar Fasciitis, it is recommended this person be put on a rehab program and take a brake from running.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Dr. Greg

I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with Plantar Faciitis. She was running 3 -4 times a week for approximately 45 minutes prior to her diagnosis. Can anyone tell me what type of treatments are available for someone with this condition? Any suggestions related to how to overcome this ailment would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
