I've been running for 20+ years injury free. I'm overweight and it may be catching up with me. I did 3 marthons in 13 months in 2004/2005 and continualy saw improvements. In the past 2 months I started having a right hip "pain" walking up stairs. I took a full month off and did "big" doses of advil. Felt fine (althought struggled to not run). I Ran 2 days this week and I'm noticing problems already. I'm looking for a few physical therapist names in Tualatin area. I'd prefer to not drive into portland. Any advice?

It is in Portland, but at least it is on the west side.

What part of your hip is bothering you? Is it in the front near the groin, or is it lateral near the glutes? Does lifting you leg (femur) up (flexing) the painful movement? Or is it weight bearing (standing on the one symptomatic leg)?

It may be possible that I can give you some stretches or exercises that could be helpful. Let me know.
Cheers,

Hello Doc.

I'd sure like to try stretches if that will help. I must admit I have almost never stretched.... I'm willing to try anything to be able to continue jogging.

my discomfort is definately on side (what I'd consider lateral) of my hip. it's just below the belt line but higher than where the bum indents. No problems lifting/flexing femur. I really notice it going up stairs, when I sleep, and randomly thru the day. I sleep on my side and at night it's waking me up now an then.

I feel no pain while running - it usually later when I notice discomfort. really hoping I dont have to stop running all together - its my stress relief and weight control (ok I'm loosing that battle). on the other hand, I dont want to do long term damage.

Sure appreciate your time and input. if I need to see a Dr, Ill do that too. I guess I'm not gonna do Helvatia half this year sad.gif

Dave,
From the sound of it, you strained your gluteus medius. This muscle stabilizes the hip during your gait cycle and abducts the femur. The best advise for home care is to ice after runs (20 min on, hour break, and repeat), stretch the hip rotators (put one leg up on a bench , table, or bed where the lower leg is flat on the bed and knee bent to 90 degrees and you lean over and lay on your bent leg while slowly relaxing your stance leg until gravity stretches your hips), stretch the hamstrings (legs together and straight, hips flexed, and back is straight, lean forward and try to touch your toes), stretch the gluteus medius and IT ( while standing step one leg in front of and across the other to bear full weight, jut hip toward the stance leg and lean toward the stretching leg). As you can imagine these stretches are best appreciated when they are demonstrated. Stop by the Clearwater tent and any one of the staff can show these stretches to you. While at the tent have one of the doctors check you for a leg length difference that may have caused this problem. Having ultrasound and/or deep tissue massage will also speed up recovery time. Depending on the severity, a couple of focused treatments may keep you in the game for Helvatia.
Cheers,
Dr. Jake
