Martier,
When you heard the pop initially were you just taking off the shoes or did the shoes come off and then you stood up and heard the pop? Is the pain on the outside of the foot next to the heel bone or is it on the bottom of the foot near the arch?
From the sound of it you may have a bone in your foot that is out of place. A bone called the cuboid that articulates with the calcaneus (heel), tarsal and metatarsal bones has a tendency to drop down, especially with people who have high arches. When the bone drops down it can strain/sprain the capsule that holds it in place. The best solution is to have it adjusted back into place and have Ultrasound and E- Stim done to reduce the inflamation. This is followed by cuboid pads placed in your shoes to prevent it from dropping down again. If the cuboid pads decrease your symptoms then you might be a good candidate for custom orthotics.
Let me know if I can help any further.

I took the week off and bought some Biosofts thinking this would help. I started running this morning and got a mile out and felt a sharp pain in the bottom of my foot. The pain is on the outside of my foot next to my heel bone versus on the bottom of my foot. It feels like I have a very sharp knife in my foot. It isn't constant. I can run a few steps but then out of nowhere, the sharp pain attacks me.
I am so disappointed and frustrated. I have a doctor's appointment but cannot get in until June 12th. From your initial diagnosis, this sounds like a few weeks of therapy and recovery. UGH! Just when I felt so good about my running. :-(
