I was running for about 2 months at 8 minute miles following the portland fit schedule, but then randomnly I got a hernia. The surgery and everything put me out of all physical activity for 3 1/2 weeks, and next week I can start running again. Has all my work been lost, and is it necesary for me to start over, or can I push myself and continue on with the schdeule as is? Any advice at all would be helpful because I am new to running, but thoroughly enjoy it.

Racetheace,

This is an excellent question and one that needs to be directed to your surgeon. If he/she does not clearly answer your question, ask for a referral to a sports dedicated rehab and conditioning specialist. It is very possible that the doctor that fixed the hernia may not be able to advise you well on the specific needs for safely getting back to your pre-surgical performance level. For hernia repair it is important to have it heal well before pushing it. Please let me know how it goes for you and if I can be of further help.

Cheers,

Dr. Bryan
