Full Version: Another foot injury

It must be that time, when we're just strong enough to over-estimate our abilities or something. Anyway,
my right foot is seriously messed up. I'm not sure how it happened; Sunday for the 10-mile walk I was wearing nasty cotton socks (laundry crisis) and blistered a couple of toes; I may have unconsciously compensated with a weirder than usual gait... short version, I walked 30 minutes with some discomfort last night and after this morning's 45 minutes I can't put weight on the foot without a lot of pain. I'm icing and taking aspirin, either tonight or tomorrow I'm buying a cane, and Saturday I'll head for the CC tent.

The pain is on the outer edge of my right foot, about even with the front of my shin -- according to the anatomy diagrams I can find, it's pretty much centered on the cuboid bone. I'm a walker, 200+ lbs, and a known severe pronator -- I use custom orthotics and Brooks Addictions. The pain is mostly dull; if I stupidly insist on walking it sharpens and radiates up the outer ankle just a little. There's some swelling along the side of the foot-- the "dip" just below the outer ankle bone has filled in. Sitting still it's maybe a 1 or 2 out of 10; when I started walking this morning it was about a 4, and when I finished it was probably a 6.5; bad but not bad enough to crawl. I've broken toes before (though not this one) and this isn't that sharp, horrible kind of pain.

Right now I'm frustrated, and trying to figure out how I can temporarily switch to swimming (which I'm not very good at) or some kind of water aerobics. I really want to be in shape for the Helvetia Half, though....

Robin,

I am a huge fan of the cuboid bone, it is a silent hero in good foot biomechanics, when it breaks the silence it usually feels like a nail in the foot. Definitely swing by the tents and we can take a look at hoe to quiet it back down for you. To keep in shape maintain your aerobic heart rate level with low to no impact activity. The exercise bike at a light setting is great for keeping leg speed up. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Cheers,

Dr. Bryan

Followup note - Dr. Bryan recommended some things for me to try, including using a golf ball on trigger points and "writing" the alphabet with my toe. I'm already feeling significant relief, and while I won't try the 11 miles in the morning, I am planning to do next week's 8 miles and (barring unforeseen circumstances) walking the Helvetia Half.
Thanks!
Robin
One more followup -- I successfully, though slowly, completed the Helvetia Half! Thanks again to Dr. Bryan for showing me how to resolve this.
