I am new to running and am experiencing very sore heels. Is this just part of the process or am I gdoing something wrong? What can I do to make them feel better?

Sorry to hear about your pain, but glad you are seeking help early to find answers.

"Clearwater Chiropractic is at the Portland Fit site (following the walk/ run) with several doctors available for consultation. I would definately check with the Doc's to rule out any obvious causes, (bad shoes, leg length discrepency, etc.) Dave or Paula, (from Portland Running and Walking Company) are also on site and are good people to watch you walk/run a few steps to check out your running economy/biomechanics, foot placement."

If you continue to have heal pain stop by on Saturday Morning at the Clearwater tent.

Have a healthy & pain free week

Hey there,
Sorry to hear about your heel troubles. Mel is on track with her advise. It is important to have heel pain evaluated sooner rather than later. Based on the location of pain it could be a number of different things. If the pain is where the achillies tendon inserts it could be tendonitis or bursitis. If the pain is on the sole of the foot just posterior to the arch where the plantar facia inserts, it could be plantar facitis. If the pain is on the sides of the heel it could be a stress fracture. Stop by on Sat. and we'll try to figure out what is happening and give you some tips on how to stretch and self massage the area to minimize your discomfort.
Cheers,
Dr. Jake

You could be experiencing pain from plantar faciaitis which is very painful and can become chronic. Run, don't walk, to have it checked out by a podiatrist if chiro's don't uncover anything. I suffered from PF for 5 years, unable to run!

So did you go to see the podiatrist before or after you suffered for 5 years from plantar fascitis?
