Are there any special precautions for a 36 y/old male with a hx. of an ACL reconstruction ('01) and medial meniscus tear? I've done pretty well so far, but haven't run more than 10 miles straight since the sx.

May I assume that you sucessfully completed all your rehab for your knee, and that you were cleared to begin running/walking activities, as tolerated?
You mentioned you hadn't run more than 10 miles since your surgery. Does that 10 miles represent the distance you have run several times all at once, or the accumulative total of miles run since surgery?
If you have done a number of 10 mile runs with no post swelling/tenderness, etc., I would say that you are good to go. Like everyone else in the program, running a marathon is something that is done using a
gradual, progressive build up of training time/miles, allowing your body time to recover from training stress as you get stronger.
Follow the schedule, listen to your body, go to the medical tables after the run for private consultation if you have any symptomatic issues with your knee. Also, make sure you have excellent shoes.
Run happy, JR

JArthur,

JR is on the money. If you completed rehab properly and have not had any painful episodes during 10 mile runs, you should be fine. Precautions are: know your body, stretch, good equipment (shoes and insoles), stretch, light-weight strength training, cross training (cycling and/or swimming) and stretch. If there is abnormal swelling or an abnormal amount of pain, have it looked at. Performing your old PT exercises for that knee would also be helpful. Did I mention stretching the quads, hip rotators, gluteus medius, and hamstrings? If you would like any help or advise with stretches and/or exercises stop by the Clearwater tent on Sat. and we will be more than happy to help.

Cheers,
Dr. Jake
