I started portland fit. The day after my five mile run my knee joints ache. They are not swollen. Sunday was my 5mile day. Tuesday I had a tough time running through the pain. Today I just did non-impact. I do not want to get behind on my runs. Any ideas to help get past these aches. I have been unable to run for about a year due to a back injury snow skiing and want so bad to get back to where I was before. Just frustrated.

Dr Bryan,

Thanks for the quick response,
I am 6ft 235Lbs size 12 shoes. Losing weight. Was 260lbs two months ago. 200 is my goal. I herniated a disc two years ago L5-S1. Rt foot and some rt leg knumbness but I have full strength. I reinjured it after a week of skiing in Feb 2005. I was able to work through the bulg this time and now have no nuerological symptoms. Rt foot and part of rt leg still has knumbness due to the previous injury. The more active I am the better the back is. So I have not done any running for about two years. Before the injury I ran about 7 miles a day.The knee pain is in both legs, but worse in the right. no swelling. I have no hx of any knee problems. Do you think I should just do the walking till the pain subsides?

Bob,

Way to go on the weight loss. Definitely a yes on the walking until the pain stops. Your history brings out my conservative side, most people know I am a “go do it” type Doc and rarely say “no or stop.” Disc tissue can heal, it usually takes 6 to 18 months if all goes well. In your case having a detailed assessment of spinal and lower extremity areas with disc specific strength and conditioning exercises is important. You may have had these already and if so are doing them consistently. If you are at PDXFIT on Saturday please stop by the tents, I’d like to take a moment to see what you squat mechanics and leg length look like and get a little more detail of your experience doing the needed rehab for previously injury the disc area. From there I can make a better recommendation for you.

Cheers,

Dr. Bryan

Thanks for your help. I had to go out of town this weekend to see family for the holiday. I will stop by next Saturday.
