What’s Next?

Congratulations to everyone that ran or walked in the Helvetia Half! For some of us, that was the farthest we’ve traveled on two feet. For others, it was the second half marathon in a month. But the big question is this : What’s Next?

Portland Fit is a running and walking program for folks of all abilities. And we’re going to continue meeting all the way through early October. So at this point, you have a few choices:

Set your sights farther! The next major milestone distance to tackle is the marathon. If you finished the Helvetia Half, you are right on schedule. All you have to do is keep your base (the regular 9-11 miles we do most weekends) and then add three more long training days — our benchmark events of 25K (15.5 miles), 30K (18.6 miles), and 21 miles. Keep coming out on the weekend and you’ll be there before you know it!

Maintain your fitness level! If the marathon is not in your plans this year, stick with us to maintain your fitness. Most weekends we do 9-11 miles and it’s a great way to keep your fitness level up. During the week, follow the schedule or substitute a new activity for a change of pace.

Hood to Coast Prep. Portland Fit is the perfect training program for the world-famous Hood to Coast relay. If you are participating in HTC this year, you’ll be amazed at how much more prepared you will be than most of the participants that just train for a couple of weeks. The mileage you have under your belt will pay big dividends. Stick with us until the big event and see for yourself.

Restart. Our New Summer Program is an opportunity to start again at 3 miles. You can give your body a break and go back to 3 miles and build up again. You can opt to go faster (new color group?) or just restart. And bring a friend! You don’t have to pay again if you joined in March, but your friend can sign up and do a half marathon with you!

Head back to the couch. This is our least favorite option, but one we know that some people choose. We hope that our members learn to love the way they feel after setting and accomplishing a goal and getting in better shape. And we hope they continue to make fitness a priority and integrate it within their lifestyle. Don’t just head back to the couch. You’ll just have to start all over again. But if you do, we hope you come back to join us as we do it all over again in 2013.

Good luck on your chosen path. But please don’t make the Helvetia Half your last finish line. Get out there and keep running and walking. And don’t forget to tell your friends about Portland Fit.

Stay fit,
John
