Marathon Morning

Marathon morning can be a bit hectic, but don’t fret. Here are Portland Fit’s plans for the day. Parking, PFit meeting, and three pro-tips!

Parking
You might think that traffic will be a concern, but if you think about it, there are less folks coming in to downtown than a typical workday. That said, don’t be late and try to cut it close. Give yourself some extra time to find a parking spot and get settled. You can hang out in your car if the weather is bad or go get in a portapotty line. Those lines can get long.

Meeting Above 24 Hour Fitness @ 6am on 10/6
Our group has an optional meeting on top of 24 Hour Fitness at SW 4th 7 SW Clay at 6am. This is a great place to meet your running and walking buddies as it can be hard to find people among the main group.

  • Please don’t park on top of 24 Hour Fitness.
  • No meeting on Saturday at PRC location on 10/5.

Pro Tip #1
If you are running late or if the portapotty lines are long, consider this… It can be fun to head out with everybody when the gun goes off, but in a crowd this big even when the gun blasts you are standing still waiting for the folks ahead of you. But the portapotty lines really clear out when the race starts. And because the race is chip timed, the little computer chip you put on your shoe will mark your time when you do eventually cross the starting line. So even if you start as much as 5 or 10 minutes after the gun goes off, you’ll still get an accurate time. Something to think about if you really have to go before you go-go. Or if you just don’t want to be with the crowd.

Pro Tip #2
The weather can really be hit or miss in early October, so plan ahead and watch the weather reports. For runners, you want to dress like it’s 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. So if it’s 40 degrees, it will feel like 60 degrees after 10 minutes of running. But also remember that you may be out there for 4 or 5 hours and it could warm up. Don’t get stuck with things you can’t take off like warm running tights or heavy jackets. It’s about the layers, people. And if it’s raining at the start, you might consider cutting a head hole in a big plastic garbage bag. It’s easy to take off and throw away after the start.

Pro Tip #3
Wear your Portland Fit shirt or hat to get a huge cheer right when you need it… at our Mile 21 Cheering Station. Plus we’ll try to take your picture and post them on our website or Facebook page. You could be our 2013 Poster Child! 🙂

And remember — if you aren’t doing the marathon, plan to join us at our cheering station! We could use the help plus it’s tons of fun.
