Fat Tuesday

Today is ‘Fat Tuesday’ — the culmination of Mardi Gras and the traditional last day of excess before the beginning of Lent. It also seems like a fine time to assess our New Year’s Resolutions after six weeks. How are you doing?

If you’re like me, you are full of good intentions around the first of January. This year I set myself a few goals:

Three Half Marathons. 2013 is the Year of the Half Marathon, so I’d like to do at least three half marathons. I’ve got my eye on Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland, Helvetia Half, and a yet-to-be-named Half Marathon. And there are lots to choose from. But three is my magic number. Last year I did two, so I’m optimistic. I started running a few times a week, but then I got sick. So I’m going to kick off this quest on February 23rd like the rest of you. Will you join me? Current Score: 0 out of 3.

Hello World. When I was a kid, I liked to memorize stuff. It didn’t matter what it was, I just liked the mental gymnastics of memorizing a list. In that spirit, I’m trying to learn how to say “Hello” in 50 languages. And I’m keeping track of when I get to use them with native speakers. My favorite is Swahili — Jambo! But I’ve already gotten to use Chinese, Korean, and Croatian with friends. If anyone knows Klingon, let me know because I’m ready for you. Current Score: 27 out of 50.

Home Cooking. I’d like to add at least three new “go-to” meals in my repertoire for midweek meals. That means 30 minutes or less. I bought a crock pot for Christmas, so I’ve got a new club in the bag, but I’ve really only added one meal this year. Bonus points if a six year old will eat it. Current Score: 1 out 3.

How are you doing on your resolutions? We’ve still got plenty of time to make a resolution and to keep them. If you have a fitness resolution, Portland Fit can help. Will you join me in three half marathons? Will you do a marathon? Remember the first secret to keeping resolutions…

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Good luck. And stay fit.
