Injury Recovery

Are you suffering from one of the most common distance running or walking injuries? If so, no need to panic as there is still plenty of time to deal with your injury and recover before marathon day. But where to start?

The first step is to IDENTIFY the problem and treat the injury. It’s surprising how many runners actually skip this step! Some runners think that injuries are “part of the game” and elect to suffer through their workouts. Our friends at Clearwater Chiropractic & Massage are a good place to start, so find them on Saturday morning, seek them out at their clinic, or talk to your doctor if you’ve got anything that’s been bugging you. Our cadre of coaches can also help you identify if what you’ve got is routine soreness or if you should consult a doctor. Rule of thumb: if an issue doesn’t resolve after two or three days off, it’s probably time to seek help.

Next it’s time to TREAT your injury. We’ve all heard about the R.I.C.E. program and rest is usually the first answer, but it doesn’t mean your training has to end. Just because you aren’t on your feet running or walking doesn’t mean you have to give up the marathon dream. Once you take some time off, other fitness modes can be employed like biking, water running, or other activities to keep your aerobic fitness up. Stay active while still respecting the doctor’s orders.

RECOVER from your injury by adding back running or walking in smaller doses. You might have to adjust your mileage so you don’t just jump back in with a long 15 miler. Ask your coach for help tweaking the schedule to catch up. Each injury has its own path back to the schedule. It’s important to treat any injuries now — if you wait to too long, minor issues can become big ones which might threaten your marathon goals.
